When I was growing up I had a favorite shawl, it was my grandmother’s.
I loved wrapping up in it, and often fell asleep with it around me.
Mom’s shawl is a perfect shawl for creating memories, for cuddling, for wearing, and for sharing. Whether you are expecting a child, have children, or knitting it as a gift for an expecting mother, this shawl will become a favorite piece in no time. To make this shawl even more precious, you can make it with left over yarn from your other projects, perhaps even left over from other baby knits. You will be creating a memory shawl that will last for years to come.

The actual gauge is not very important, gauges listed below are just a guideline.
Fingering Gauge: ~24 sts in 4”/10 cm in stockinette on US #4/3.5 mm needles
DK Gauge: ~ 22 sts in 4”/10 cm in stockinette on US #6/4.0 mm needles
Worsted-Aran Gauge: ~18 sts in 4”/10 cm in stockinette on US #7/4.5 mm needles
Chunky Gauge: ~ 15-16 sts in 4”/10 cm on US #9/5.5 mm needles

Yardage will vary with yarn weight. You will need ~ 800-1100 yds/732-1006 m.

There is no standard size, instead you can decide on how big you want to make your shawl. Depth of the shawl greatly depends on measurement A, i.e. the wingspan, and yarn weight. Below we list approximate sizes for sizes Small, Medium, and Large as a guideline, however you can easily adjust the size to your preferences.

Wingspan: 55-60”/140-152cm; 60-65”/152-165 cm; 75-80” /191-203 cm
Depth: 18-20”/46-51 cm; 30-32”/76-81 cm; 34-36”/86-91 cm
