Another illusion knitting experiment. It didn’t come out exactly as we thought but is still very interesting and surprising.

Most people are familiar with Mondrian’s paintings with small blocks of primary colours on a dazzling white background and black grid. This illusion is based on his Composition with Yellow, Blue and Red.

The finished piece is just over 20 inches square though the size might change if you used a different type of yarn. It is finished with a border so it can be used as a wall-hanging. You could also incorporate it into an afghan or make a large cushion.

When you look at the hanging from the side you can see the dominant blocks of colour, as in the original painting. Due to the nature of illusion knitting the colours never quite disappear from view and there is always a hint of the hidden colours

Look at the hanging from directly in front and you see something quite surprising.
