Lattes & Llamas proudly presents this pattern as part of Riot Witch Summer: 11 patterns to knit in the dead of summer while dreaming of autumn and the fall of the patriarchy.

Hello, Knitters. Have you felt the primal call of the mystical moon calling you to strike down those who would defy you? No? Well, if you stopped wearing normal run of the mill hand-warmers and switched to Moonlit Magic, you might.

Look down. Back up. Where are you? You’re a powerful witch with your coven of knitters underneath the full moon, cackling as you hex the insidious nature of the patriarchy, and you look amazing.

What’s in your hand? Back at me. It’s the power of moonbeams you infused into every stitch of your Moonlit Magic mitts to help you defeat a hated foe. It does wonders for your coziness levels and resilience, and we all can agree that we will need that in the upcoming months.

Look again: those moonbeam are now a formal apology from the last person who had unnecessarily and condescendingly tried to explain something to you. Anything is possible when you look like a terrifying yet glamourous witch and embrace your own rage to make the world a better place.

I’m on a broomstick.

Moonlit Magic is worked in the round with stranded knitting from the cuff to the fingers. The thumb stitches are placed on waste yarn to be picked up and knit later. This pattern is recommended for knitters who have experience with stranded colorwork, knitting in the round, and reading charts.

Mitt Yarn
Two skeins of Lattes & Llamas Interlude Yarn (70% Superwash Bluefaced Leicester, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere; 100 g – 438 yds / 400 m) or a comparable fingering weight yarn in contrasting colorways.

Sample is shown in ‘Khaaaaan’ as Color A and ‘In Omnia Paratus’ as Color B.

Color A: 162 yds / 148 m – 37 g
Color B: 92 yds / 84 m – 21 g

Mitten Yarn
Two skeins of Lattes & Llamas Vacation Yarn (75% Superwash Merino, 25% Nylon; 100 g – 463 yds / 423 m) or a comparable fingering weight yarn in contrasting colorways.

Sample is shown in ‘Jessica Jones’ as Color A and ‘Ouroboros’ as Color B.

Color A: 209 yds / 191 m – 45 g
Color B: 116 yds / 106 m – 25 g

When choosing your yarn, make sure that Colors A and B contrast strongly. I recommend taking a photograph of the yarns together, and then changing it into black and white to see if the colors contrast strongly enough.

Needles
US 1 / 2.25 mm 40” circular needles to work in Magic Loop for the cuff or size needed to obtain gauge.

US 2 / 2.75 mm 40” circular needles to work in Magic Loop for the colorwork or size needed to obtain gauge.

I prefer the Magic Loop method when knitting mitts. If you are more comfortable using DPNs or two circulars, this pattern is easily converted.

Gauge
32 sts and 38 rnds = 4” / 10 cm in stranded colorwork with US 2 / 2.75 mm needles, knit in the round and blocked.

Adjusting the gauge listed above or the pattern will alter the size of your mitts and change the yardage requirements.

Finished Size
Mitts One Size: 9” / 23 cm long and 8” / 20.25 cm in circumference after blocking.

Mittens One Size: 12” / 30.5 cm long and 8” / 20.25 cm in circumference after blocking.

Instructions are included to modify the size of your mitts by going up or down a needle size.
