Notes from the Designer:

In Greek, you don’t really say “I miss you.” You say “Mou Leipeis” (Mu Lee-pees), which means, “You are missing from me.” I heard this phrase at my sister-in-law Lori’s celebration of life. Lori and my brother had a special love story. They met and married as teenagers, divorced a few years later, reunited, and remarried 30 years later.

Throughout those missing 30 years, I stayed in touch with Lori. She loved all the knitted and crocheted items I made and was often a recipient of them. She liked the technical aspect of how items were created and often asked questions on how I made my items, as she did with this poncho.

She had been fighting cancer for several years, and one day I was visiting with her, working on the poncho. As usual, she started asking all her questions, and I happily answered. After a while, she said, “Thank you.” I was confused and asked her what she was thanking me for. She said for always being willing to answer all her questions and not make her feel dumb for not knowing. I told her that it is me who should be giving thanks. Thanks for taking such an interest in my hobby. Thanks for letting me share my excitement when I find that perfect yarn or pattern. Thank you for being in our lives and making them better and being the best partner to my brother. Mou Leipeis, Lori. This pattern is for you.

  • Click here to watch a video tutorial on how to work the first few rows.
  • The total yardage for sizes without the collar: S/M: 820 yds (750 m), L/XL: 1053 yds (963 m), and 2XL/3XL: 1317 yds (1204 m).
  • The total yardage for sizes with the collar: S/M: 1040 yds (951 m), L/XL: 1305 yds (1193 m), and 2XL/3XL: 1601 yds (1464 m).
  • Each blocked panel size (width x length): S/M: 16” (41 cm) x 28” (71 cm), L/XL: 18” (46 cm) x 32” (81cm), and 2XL/3XL: 20” (51 cm) x 36” (91 cm).
  • The sample was made using an alternate double crochet starting chain as it makes a cleaner edge, but it is not a requirement. You can chain 3 instead, if you prefer.
  • You will be crocheting multiple dc stitches around the post of one dc to create a slanted look.
  • Gauge isn’t critical but can affect the yardage used. Make sure you purchase enough yarn to complete your project.
  • Size L/XL has one more double crochet between repeats then the other sizes. This is not a typo.
  • My tester’s found that if they were between XL and 2XL, the L/XL fit better.
