“So Sally can wait; She knows it’s too late; As we’re walking on by; Her soul slides away; But don’t look back in anger; I heard you say” “Don’t Look Back In Anger”, Noel Gallagher, 1995

Like the fast forward symbol on a remote control, triangles and arrow-shapes always convey to me a sense of movement: a sense of moving forward. Something that I know, I need reminding of every so often! That’s not to say that I advocate overlooking things that have happened in the past, but to try not to dwell on them. As Noel Gallagher would say “Don’t look back in anger” . . . or did he pinch that from playwright John Osbourne? Ha!
Either way, it’s my hope that as you watch the stitches unfold on your needles, these little mitts, with their geometric patterning, will be a wee reminder of that sentiment.

CONSTRUCTION NOTES
The Moving Forward Mitts are knitted in the round, from the wrist upwards. Increases are made for the thumb, with the stitches being placed on hold and worked when the hand is complete.
The thumb pattern and main pattern are separated by a stitch marker placed after working the cuff. The thumb pattern is worked in garter stitch and slip stitches, whereas the main pattern is worked in a combination of garter stitch, slip stiches and stocking stitch

YARN
Yarn A (light): The Silly Sheep fibre company, 2ply/4ply equivalent Cheviot yarn (4ply; approx. 75 m / 82 yds per 25 g ball; 100% Cheviot yarn)
Yarn B (dark): The Silly Sheep fibre company, 2ply/4ply equivalent Hebridean yarn (4ply; approx. 63 m / 69 yds per 25 g ball; 100% Hebridean yarn)
Yarn choices: The mitts’ combination of slip stitches and garter stitch makes for a super dense and cosy fabric. Try choosing shades that are highly contrasting (as per the sample), or perhaps a wildly variegated yarn for A (in place of the lighter colour) and a solid shade for B.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
3.25 mm / US 3 DPNs or 80 cm (32”) circular needle for magic loop
1 stitch marker, plus 1 distinct marker for BOR
Waste yarn and tapestry needle

GAUGE
24 sts x 56 rnds = 10 cm / 4” measured over main pattern

SIZES
S/M (M/L) designed to fit a hand circumference of approximately 16.5 – 18 cm (19 – 20.5 cm) / 6.5 – 7” (7.5 – 8”). The stitch pattern is stretchy so these two sizes will fit a wide range of hand circumferences: measure around the widest part of your hand and choose the closest size.
See schematic in photos for details.
Sample knitted in a size M/L and shown on hands with circumference of 19.5 cm.
