I did a test chain with 30 + 14. When I did the first row following her instructions, I was left with 3 chains at the end. She said the pattern repeat was 10, but I only count 9 chains in the parentheses section. I think the “sk 1 ch” after the second DC should be “sk 2 ch”. When I did it like that it all came out even. So, I think the first row should be:

1: Sc in 9th ch from hook, ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, (ch 3, sk 2 ch, dc in next ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch, ch 3, sk 2 ch, sc in next ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch) across until you have fewer than 10 ch left, ch 3, sk 2 ch, dc in next ch, turn. If you have any chains in the foundation chain left, leave them unworked. When you complete the shawl, undo those chains and weave in the end.
