It was so FUN to make this sweater!
The idea started out when I was taking a walk in an area where I had never been before. All of a sudden I was lost - and I didn’t quite understand how I should return to my starting point. I tried out several directions, it seemed for a while that I was turning in circles. Suddenly I recognized a building, and I could nestle my way back to where I began.
Meanwhile I had the wonderful idea to work a sweater in the same way - knitting the pieces into different directions. The difference is that I knew all the time where I was going….

Construction The construction of this sweater is so easy, yet very unusual. You start work the left front/back bottom-up - with a cable at the beginning and end of the piece. Worked to armhole, where work is divided and front and back are continued in separate pieces. Shoulders are bound off together from WS using the 3-needle cast-off. Stitches are picked up along the cable for back and right back/right front is worked sideways towards the center of the front. The different directions of the body means that cables are placed horizontally as well as vertically:))
Sleeves are worked top-down and in the round from picked-up sts along the armhole-openings.
The collar is worked bottom-up and in the round. You could work the sweater completely seamless, or with 2 straight seams only. I give you instructions either way you prefer!

The Design The sweater is meant to be comfortable and relaxed - for easy outdoor living - or curling up inside in a a deep chair when the autumn winds are shaking the roof! The sample is made with 5” of positive ease which gives a soft and easy-going fit. Cuffs and cowl are made extra-long to add warmth.
I played with the simple patterns to give an overall interest: 1 sleeve is made in single moss, the other in double moss, cables are climbing up the center back and front, as well as being placed horizontally over one shoulder….

The pattern This pattern has been tested by a lovely group of test-knitters, as well as proof-readI guide you through the construction from first to last stitch. I have added a clear schematic to show the different knitting-directions. Moss-(seed-st)patterns and Cable-patterns come with full charts AND written (row-by-row instructions). The Diamond Guernsey pattern is charted only, All necessary stitch-counts are given, all measurements are in cm’s as well as inches.

Sizes Finished bust measurements are: 36/40.5/43/45/48/50/52.5”. Allow some positive ease to make it comfortable! Sample is knit with 5” of positive ease.
WoolYou need a worsted/10ply wool to work this sweater. I used Cataluna - from the Danish brand Cewex - but there are so many similar qualities at the market. Cascade220 or Patons North American Worsted for instance.
You need 1134/1260/1386/1512/1764/1890/2016yards of above “Cataluna” to work the sweater.

Needles You need a cable needle. You need straight or circular needles 5mm/US8 to work the body of the sweater. Sleeves are worked using dpns or circular needles 5mm/US8. Cuffs and cowl are worked using dpns or circular needles 3.5mm/US4 . Please note that needle size depends on the gauge!
Notions Separate holders, stitch-markers

Knitting skills This pattern is suitable for a knitter with some experience. The construction is very unusual - but logical and without difficulties. All patterns, including the cables, are simple and repetetive. Skills needed: picking up stitches, working in the round, working simple cables, binding off using the 3-needle method. Abbreviations used: k, p, pm/sm (place marker, slip marker), k2tog, k2togtbl
