While my grandmother never taught me to knit, she did love needlework. Her mother was an avid crocheter and one of her regrets was never learning to crochet from her mother. So, she set out to learn to crochet at the age of 81. A year later, she asked me to teach her to knit!

As my grandmother was also a bit of a pack rat, she had kept several booklets of knitting, tatting, and crochet patterns. When I started knitting, she gave me those booklets. The inspiration for these mittens comes from one of those booklets and they are named for her. I always thought my grandmother’s name evoked the 1920’s, when she was born. I hope these little mittens make you think of Norma Nadean while you are knitting them, the woman who decided that she could learn to knit or crochet at any age!

This pattern is meant for an adventurous novice to advanced knitter and all those in-between.
