Very nearly mittens, this pattern attempts to give dexterity offered by fingerless handwear with the minimum of compromise to warmth. The primary pattern allows the thumb and first finger out to do whatever. My primary concern is camera operation. Since other applications may only need thumbs out or a finger out or different combinations on each hand, instructions to close off the thumb or fingers normally are also given.

The pattern is given in two different forms. One is conceptual and the other concrete. Since the conceptual one may not make perfect sense, the concrete pattern serves as an example. Of course, if knitting the same gauge, then the concrete pattern can be used directly for women’s medium-large.

Since they are worked in-the-round, you will need whatever sort of needles you are most comfortable with for doing that work. I use cable needles. You will also need a yarn needle to work in the ends. The whole project should take less than one skein for two mittens. A tape measure will be required to work with the more flexible conceptual pattern.
