The year 2016 was the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Smart Knits - a knitting group out of Logan, Utah - thought that a great way to celebrate the National Park Service and the sublime lands that it protects was to design a National Parks blanket. Since 2016, four new parks have been established. We have designed squares for these new parks.

The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, established in 2020, is located in the Appalachian Mountains and protects the unique geology and ecosystems of the New River Gorge. This gorge is the longest and deepest in the Appalachian Mountains and is formed by the flow of the New River. The New River, a north-flowing river, is considered by geologists to be the oldest river in the United States and likely the second oldest river in the world (second only to the Nile River). Old rivers etch their histories in the landscape in layers of script-like, meandering loops. This pattern design shows some of the more script-like bends in the New River.
