The New Sensations Shawl
A Bottom-Up, Striped Shawl By Corrado Lark

The Needs:

  • 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn in two contrasting colors. High contrast is important for this design. Originally knit in wonderful Wull Studios’ Eco Merino Light. -Color A: A light blue, “Moonstone”, 437yd/100g -Color B: A charcoal purpley-gray, “Magnetite”, 437yd/100g
  • One US 4 / 3.5mm 40” circular needle
  • One US 5 / 3.75mm 40” circular needle (An interchangeable set makes this easiest)
  • At least one stitch marker (two to help with the short rows)
  • A darning needle
  • Gauge: 24 stitches and 20 rows per 4” of blocked garter stitch.
  • Finished Dimensions: One Size, 40x40x64” . A reversible, rounded triangle.

Techniques Used/Design Attributes:

Starts with my slip stitch tab to create a bottom-up triangle shawl. Stripes, simple lace and eyelets, ribbing, slipped stitch textures. Reversible!

The Backstory:

It’s been a long time since I sat down and designed something from start to finish in as short a period of time as I had this shawl. It was right after the men’s knitting retreat, which I credit for healing my knitting trauma.

Yes, knitting trauma. Lots of stuff behind the scenes, lots of stuff I don’t wanna talk about. But all that needs to be said is I’ve moved on and I’m happy to be back working on my designs again.

This one alternates between right and wrong sides, stripes and short rows, texture and lace. It never bores for a second, but nothing is unapproachable by most knitters. Just make sure to choose high contrast colors for your shawl, it just won’t be the same without!

The name references the INXS song. I’ve had them on repeat for a while now, and looking to turn a new leaf. Felt suiting.
