The Newfoundland Dog (Newfie) is a large, usually black, breed of dog originally used as a working dog in Newfoundland, Canada. They are known for their sweet disposition, loyalty and natural water rescue tendencies. The Newfoundland dog excells at water rescues, due partly to their webbed feet, water resistant coat, and amazing swimming abilities. They require frequent grooming, at least once every two weeks. Newfoundland dogs are laid back and considered easy to housebreak.

The Newfoundland’s standard colors are black, brown, grey, and landseer (black head and white and black body.) The average weight for males is 130 - 150 lbs and females 120 - 140 lbs. Some Newfoundland dogs have been known to weigh over 200 lbs and measured over 6 feet from nose to tail.
