Ngahere is my first pattern and is greatly inspired by the beautiful forest I am fortunate to live within here on Mana Island. Ngahere (na-here-re) is the Maori word for forest and in Māori tradition, people and forests are vitally connected – both were created by the god Tāne. The interweaving leaves represent this connection between people and nature and embodies the “wairua o te ngahere”, the spirit of the forest. The feminine version was inspired by the beautiful small leaved coprosma I found growing amongst the larger trees.

Construction: Ngahere is a slouch beanie, knit in the round from the brim upwards. An interwoven leaf panel travels from the garter stitch brim, through the stocking stitch body to the crown.

The pattern is written in two versions, Unisex and Feminine for worsted weight yarn, and 7 sizes.

You will need to know how to work small circumferences in the round and knitting lace. If you do not know how to do this you may need to reference a knitting book or online tutorial.

Sizing: Ngahere has negative ease built into the pattern, it is designed to ensure a snug fit while being worn. Please take the time to measure head circumference in centimetres, and select the size closest – if needed, size down rather than up. Ages given are just a suggestion – measuring is always preferable.
