In J.R.R. Tolkien’s world of Middle-Earth Nimrodel was the small river that rose in the eastern foothills of the Misty Mountains, and flowed east to meet the Celebrant on the western borders of Lothlorien. When the Fellowship of the Ring came to the river they could hear it splashing over a waterfall on their right. It was said that the water of the stream was “healing to the weary”. After passing through Khazad-dum, the Fellowship crossed and stopped by the Nimrodel to rest.
Because of this “healing to the weary” I thought that Nimrodel is a nice name for this beautiful and lofty shawl. Because knitting should relax and its said that knitting has a soul healing effekt.

I have designed this nice shawl as a perfect holiday project. It often happens that you are on holidays and you see a couple of nice skein of yarn. You want to start knitting immediately? You don’t want to think about yarn consumption and calculations? Just sit down at the beach or on the balcony of your hotel / apartment and start knitting. No need for packing a calculator or a kitchen scale in your trunk! :-)

Nimrodel is a simply constructed shawl which is worked bottom-up. Its shape is achieved by regularly increases at the sides.
The most beautiful thing is that you can knit the shawl in every yarn, you don’t need to weight yarn or note any yarn consumption. You can concentrate on the charts (pattern repeats), you don’t need any skills except of yarn overs and knitting stitches together. After a little while you will be able to knit mindlessly till the yarn is used up.

The provisional cast-on may be new for you but it is explained in this pattern.
Finishing the bottom lace also requires no calculations. This will also be explained in the pattern.

Needed Materials:

  • approx. 100 - 150 gr (3.5 - 5.29 oz) of laceweight to sport weight yarn. The yardage has to be adjusted. The yarn should be elastic because the shawl will be blocked strongly after washing.
  • knitting needle matching the yarn used
  • stitch markers
  • scissors
  • sewing needle

The patternruns 9 pages and contains detailled charts (no written pattern!), a phototutorial and a schematic.

Skill level: intermediate
