No. 25 Ladies Knitted Leggings

This pattern is available for free.

A pattern for beautiful, over the knee wool leggings. This historic pattern uses two sections of ribbing and a gusset at the knee to provide a snug fit. Germantown wool is recommended, and may be substituted with any worsted wool. An antique size 10 seems to correspond to a 3.25mm needle, though you should select the needle size and yarn weight that give a suitable fabric.

On construction:

  • Each legging is worked flat from cuff to sole.
  • The knee gusset is formed by decreasing on alternate rows, then casting on extra stitches to either side of the center of the knee. These cast on stitches are later sewn to the decrease row.
  • The heel is formed by knitting front and back on alternate rows, then the top of the foot is shaped, then stitches are picked up on either side of this top section, and all stitches worked in garter stitch for 6 rows.
  • Finish by grafting stitches together under the sole, and sewing up the back of the leg, and knee gusset.
