This is a simple pattern, suitable for almost any worsted or aran weight yarn, that works up in an afternoon. Gauge isn’t important here.

There is no stuffing. It’s body is given shape by a 3.5”/9cm long by 1”/3cm wide tube inside. You can use a bobbin, thread roll, tin foil roll, paper towel roll, or practically any rolled up card board. Then, before closing it up, add a pinch or two of catnip and, may be, a bell. My cats love it.

It’s very sturdy, no small parts that can be easily pulled off. It’s worked in one piece except for the fins, that are crocheted in.

If using wool, this can be felted. Just pop the cardboard ring back into shape before drying.
