This little baby cardigan, with its top-down construction and an all-over pattern of stockinette and reverse stockinette stitch, is truly simple. It would be equally suitable for a boy or girl. Very gender specific clothes for very small babies only serve as a way to signal the baby’s gender to the rest of the world, but I think babies themselves prefer something that’s just comfortable to wear, and can be put on and taken off without too many tears. This simple cardigan also shouldn’t cause any tears for even beginner knitters.

Version 3 is the current one. Row 5 is correctly written as “K2, yo, k2tog, k11, pm, k10, pm, k19, pm, k10, pm, k14” and there is 220 stitches before dividing into body and sleeves. Earlier versions contained errors in row 5 and the stitch number before dividing.
