A North Fork variation!

This is like the North Fork shawl, but it—well, it varies a little. Once again, it’s customizable, and can be knit at any size, from kerchief to oversized wrap—but the repeat is longer, and includes more variety. This has a lot of visual appeal in the finished shawl, and it’s not more difficult to knit. You’ll probably want to make it bigger, though, since it’s a little more interesting to knit and wear.

(On the other hand, there’s something to be said for a shawl that’s a straight shot, too, with no interruption. So the North Fork Shawl is here, too.)

Gauge:
There isn’t one! Use yarn you like and needles that give you a fabric you love.

The shawl shown has a gauge of 16 sts and 20 rows over 10cm/4” in blocked brioche rib, though, and this is a pretty nice in a sport/heavy fingering weight.

Materials:

  • 2-3 skeins of Noro Silk Garden Sock, Malabrigo Arroyo, Malabrigo Rastita, or any yarn appropriate for a shawl. The sample shown took a little over two skeins: one of Malabrigo Arroyo in Plomo, one of Rastita in Glitter, and a bit of handspun and additional scraps of Malabrigo Mechita in Pearl.

  • 1 48”/120cm circular needle in US5/3.75mm, or size needed for gauge

  • Tapestry needle

One last thing to note: this is a patchwork piece, made up of mismatched skeins and leftovers, so it doesn’t include explicit instructions on when to change colors to match the sample look. A rough breakdown can be found on the sample project page, if you’re interested in that kind of thing.
