This design is evocative of the soaring, wind-tossed tops of our local pine trees—Maine’s state tree, the white pine (Pinus strobus). With a lined cuff and fitted thumb gusset, this is a very warm, cozy pair of mittens, especially when made in a wool-alpaca blend. Made in aran-weight yarn, this pair knits up very quickly! The pattern includes 2 sets of charts, one for each of two adult sizes, average and large. Working in worsted weight yarn at a tighter gauge would result in a small adult/large child size. Length is easily adjusted as needed.

SIZES: Adult Average (Adult Large)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Circumference: 8 (8.8) inches in circumference
Length: 10 (11.5) inches in length
Fits hands measuring up to 8.5 (9.25) inches in circumference
Changes to gauge or yarn weight, or adding length, may require extra yarn

GAUGE: 20 sts and 24 rnds = 4”/10cm on gauge size needles

NEEDLES:
US 6 (4.0mm), or size needed to obtain gauge
US 5 (3.75mm), or 1 size smaller than gauge needle
Choose needle types base on your preferred method of working small circumferences in the round. Options include magic-loop on a 32-inch circular needle, DPNs, or 2 24-inch circular needles.

NOTIONS: 2 stitch markers, a length of smooth yarn for a holder, tapestry needle

SKILLS USED: working in the round, decreases (k2tog, ssk), increases (M1), using a chart, 2-color colorwork, picking up stitches
