The lusekoften comes from the Sete Valley in Norway and are sometimes called Setesdal. Since the 1840s they have been traditionally knit in the round on five double-pointed needles (stitches evenly distributed on four needles plus one working needle) in a natural black wool with the horizontal patterns worked in a natural white wool.

Directions are given for cutting all the way down the front to make it a cardigan, if preferred. The sleeves are knitted separately and sewn or knitted in.
