Sadly, the wonderful nurse uniforms of yesteryear have gone the way of the dodo, and you’re unlikely to see a modern nurse in anything but dumpy scrubs. Luckily, the Naughty Nurse has become a fantasy standard, so nurse whites will live forever, if only in television, porn, and novelty sex costume catalogs. If you want something a bit nicer for your nursecepades, here’s a dandy little felted nurse cap. It knits up quickly in a superbulky brushed alpaca that felts like a dream. After several unfortunate failed intarsia versions, I decided to go with needle felting. It prevents fiber bleed and bunching from the extra bulk of all those intarsia tails. Plus, it’s fun! Alternatively, you can embroider your cross and trim, after felting, using a diagonal satin stitch with a slip stitch outline for the cross and a slip stitch or chain stitch for the trim.
