Ocean Moon: each lace repeat represents the moon over the ocean waves.

Ocean Moon is knit sideways in one piece. Sideways shawls have the advantage of using up almost all of a luxurious skein or two: weigh your yarn at the outset, and knit until you have used almost half of your yarn. That is the midpoint of your shawl. Now knit the other half with the remaining yarn.

You can use any yarn and any needle size you like. It works best to use a relatively large needle for your yarn so that the lace work blocks out well. An estimate for the deep version of the shawl is 450 to 500 yards in fingering weight yarn. An estimate for the narrow version of the shawl is 350 to 400 yards in fingering weight yarn.

Two sets of charts and two sets of written instructions are provided, one set for the narrow version of the shawl, and one set for the deeper version of the shawl. The shawl is easily customized within either of these versions. You can add an optional straight section in the middle if you want more length without additional depth.
