October here can bring those days that begin with chill mists but have surprisingly warm sunshine by lunchtime. Equally, the evenings and early mornings begin to have a wintry bite that make thoughts turn to woollen warmth and comfort. The October cardigan is richly textured with cables but hasn’t too much bulk, so it can be reached for as an extra layer over that last-wear-of-summer dress or begin the serious business of winter warming over a flannel shirt or roll neck jersey.

Tubular rib cast-on (optional); working cables flat from a chart or written instructions; decreasing using k2tog and ssk; working two sets of stitches, each with their own yarn ball, simultaneously; picking up and knitting stitches from a cast off edge; seaming flat pieces using mattress stitch.
