The Story
Oleg Shuplyak is a Ukrainian artist whose dual-natured paintings are a marvel. The intricacy and skill with which he combines elements to create portraits from gnarled trees, hills and embedded figures – or, in the case of the John Lennon portrait, an angel, an eerily evil figure and a guitar player underscored by the word “Imagine” – are truly admirable.

The double-sided nature of the pattern stitch used in this design seemed a perfect fit, and so the name for this double-sided cowl was chosen. The two faces of this pattern stitch are not identical but present two different yet pleasing faces.

Pattern Notes
This pattern is knit in the round. Undulating Garter stitch borders frame the pattern stitch for this cowl. The pattern stitch forms a pleasing design on both fabric sides so this cowl may be worn with either side as the public side.

A Technique sheet is included for the stretchy bind off used in this pattern (Lori’s Twisty Bind Off) and for ending a Bind Off in the round to avoid a jog.

Both charts and written directions for charts are included in the pattern.

Adjusting the Circumference
The circumference of this cowl is easily adjusted. General directions are given in the pattern. Chart and written directions will need to reflect any changes made by the knitter and extra yardage will be required, of course.
