Because omgwtf, 2020??

It even snowed the day I took this photo of the hat in late April. What’s next? Locusts? Oh well…Complaining about the weather or the pandemic won’t change things, but you can give 2020 the finger and knit a really cool hat that’s way easier than it looks (cables only every 10th row!) and is entirely reversible.

So that’s 2 hats for the price of one, right??

There’s even a great video tutorial for the cables as well as the lifted increase (it gives you a perfectly smooth increase—no bumps!).

Work it with a mohair-silk laceweight held together with a fingeringweight yarn, or you can knit it in a straight-up DK weight yarn. The hat is super stretchy, so the fit is very flexible.

And hey--if the weather’s too nice to wear a hat by the time you finish it, congrats--your knitting obviously made Mother Nature cooperate. Plus, you can always use your hat to therapeutically scream into on days when pandemic life gets to you.

The cable pattern is both charted and written out line-by-line.

A Tip on Gauge: It can be tough to guess which needle size to use for an all-over cable pattern--I used the same needle size for main body of the hat as I would use to get 21 sts/4” in stockinette.

Materials: 1(1, 1) skein of Miss Babs Moonglow (435 yds/100 g, mohair-silk shown in Quicksilver) AND
1(1, 1) skein of Miss Babs Tarte (500 yards/110 g, shown in Quicksilver, or approximately
195(225, 260) yds EACH of fingeringweight and laceweight yarn (or of DK yarn)

Finished Measurements: Sizes S(M, L) measure 16(18, 22.5)” in circumference, unstretched; Depth of hat is approx. 9” from the hem to crown. Size M is show in the photo.
