This pattern is the first in a series of HAWAIIAN-THEMED SOCK KITS, and celebrates the Island of Hawai’i, also called The Big Island. It features a lace pattern, bobbles, pre-strung beadwork, and instructions for a tabi as well as a traditional toe.

Included in the kit are: 1 skein of Nadezhda’s Crayon Box ~hand-dyed in Hawaii~ 100% superwash merino wool; color Pahoehoe, enough seed beads to work one pair of Pahoehoe socks, beading tool, small piece of felt for beads.

Materials Needed: 2 Circular Knitting Needles – 16″ (40 cm) and 24″ (60 cm) long: Women’s Small: US 1.5 (2.5 mm); Women’s Medium and Large: US 2 (2.75 mm); 1 spare double-pointed needle same, point protectors (optional); stitch markers; tapestry needle; small amount of waste yarn.

The instructions for this sock pattern use 2 circular knitting needles. You may choose to use a set of double-pointed needles or a single circular needle. While this pattern offers set-up instructions to knit socks on 2 circular needles, it is not designed to teach the technique in depth. Please use the method you are most comfortable with.

In Hawaii, we mostly wear flip flops… and here, they are called slippers. They come in many shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common: The big toe is always separated from the rest of the toes.

Naturally, we don’t wear socks with our slippers most of the time. But even paradise has cool evenings at times. It also bestows upon us extreeeeemely well air-conditioned stores and restaurants all of the time! This certainly is a pleasant feature when you come in out of humid heat and you shortly leave again. Heck! That’s super refreshing! But if you are trying to enjoy – let’s say – a fabulous meal and you’re walking into the place in your cute shorts and summer top as well as your slippers…well, then you are going to freeze your butt off….and your toes!

Enter the tabi-toed sock. Suddenly, the big toe is separated from the rest, the slippers slip on easy and fit nicely, and toes and feet stay warm. Ingenious!
