Named for the genus that produces such familiar vining plants as Virginia Creeper, Boston Ivy and Grape Woodbine, this warm cowl is a great compliment to the fingerless gloves/mitts, leg warmers and hat of the same name.

Two style options are given in this pattern; a circular version worked in the round, or a buttoned version worked flat. The classic unbuttoned version is perfect for those who want to just quickly pop something on to keep their neck warm; the buttoned version is a great option for the person who isn’t keen on an over-the-head cowl, but also doesn’t want to fuss with the length of a standard scarf. The buttoned version is also a great way to show off those pretty buttons you’ve been collecting!

Gauge is given for the ribbed fabric in its relaxed state, with only the knit stitches showing. The finished object will require blocking to achieve proper proportions and show off the cables to best advantage.

  • knit in the round or knit flat, using the needles and techniques you prefer in the size required you need to make gauge
  • a cable needle recommended
  • unbuttoned version: one stitch marker to mark beginning/end of round; three other stitch markers optional to mark pattern repeats
  • buttoned version: two stitch markers to mark the border stitches separate from the body, 7 buttons; three to five other stitch markers optional to mark pattern repeats

A great gift knit, requiring only a single skein of worsted weight yarn. Aran or DK weight yarn may be substituted, with appropriate needle adjustment to make gauge. Changing the weight of the yarn used will affect yardage required.

The Parthenocissus Cowl pattern is available for individual sale, or as part of the Winter Vines collection.
