Penguin Jumper

Tasmanian Conservation Trust
Knitting
October 2011
DK / 8 ply (11 wpi)
US 3 - 3.25 mm
US 5 - 3.75 mm
This pattern is available for free.

We knitted jumpers for Blue Penguins affected by the October 2011 Rena oil spills in Tauranga, New Zealand, but there are now plenty, so no need for more!

Here is the Ravelry discussion and the edited penguin sweater pattern.

If you’re currently working on a jumper, finish it and send it to :

Maree Buscke
Penguin Power
c/- Skeinz
5 Husheer Place,
PO Box 3123,
Napier 4142, NZ

Maree passes them on to her contact with the bird rescue crew in Tauranga. As reported on the Skeinz blog, there are now plenty of jumpers, but any more received will be kept in reserve.

(Ten years ago, there was a similar oil spill in Australia, near Melbourne, and they put out a call for 100 sweaters: keen knitters sent them 15,000 in the end (FAQ)! The Australian penguins now have HEAPS of jumpers, and by making this a Ravelry pattern, we hoped to avoid this going viral, and creating a similar sweater deluge…)

Thanks to Shelley Taylor for transcribing and converting the Australian pattern. Note that the similar pattern in Astounding Knits uses the wrong needle sizes.
