About this pattern:
Pennon came about as a design conundrum. I wondered if it was possible to design an elongated triangular shawl with concentric stripes. I also wondered if I could design an asymmetric piece that was more than just an interesting geometric puzzle, but also something that was beautiful to wear.

Pennon is a triangular shawl that is knitted from the center out to the edge in rounds. Begun on double point needles, the piece grows rapidly and is worked on successively larger circular needles. There are alternating garter and stockinette sections that highlight the concentric triangular construction.

Skills required:
You must be able to: knit in the round on both double pointed needles and circular needles, make yarn over (yo) increases. While the construction is unusual, the actual knitting is simple.

Materials:
Yarn: Yarn Carnival High Wire (Fingering Weight, 100% Superwash Merino, 490 yds/100g) in 3 colors. The yarns ideally should be semi-solids, but the main color could have small flecks of a color as well.

You will need 490 yds of Color A, 245 yds of Color B, 390 yds of Color C.

Colors used in this pattern:
Version 1: (gray/gold/purple)
Color A: Big Bad Wolf
Color B: Found Gold
Color C: Amaranthine

Version 2: (gray, yellow, cobalt)
Color A: Storm Water
Color B: Heliocentric
Color C: Bottle Tree

Needles: US size 6(4.00mm), double point needles, and 16”, 24”, 36”, 47” or similar length circular needles, or size needed to achieve gauge.

Notions: 7 stitch markers, preferably 2 each of 3 colors and 1 of an additional color; tapestry needle for weaving in.

Gauge:
21 sts/40 rows=4” in stockinette.

Size:
27”x 61” measured across shortest and longest sides.
