This pattern will give you the skills to dive into your yarn stash, grab a set of needles and knit a hat to fit any recipient.

Working with your own needle choice and gauge you’ll learn how to:

  • Take measurements from a head (or use a set of standard measurements)
  • Apply appropriate ease to make it fit as desired
  • Caculate a cast on
  • Work the brim and rise of the hat
  • Calculate and implement decreases for the crown Finish up

Yarn and Yardage
This will depend on your choice of yarn and gauge, but as a guide allow at least the following amounts:

Size Light yarn Medium yarn Heavy yarn
Baby 210 yds (192 m) 111 yds (101 m) 76 yds (70 m)
Toddler 230 yds (209 m) 120 yds (110 m) 85 yds (77 m)
Child 245 yds (223 m) 130 yds (117 m) 90 yds (81 m)
Adult M 265 yds (240 m) 140 yds (130 m) 95 yds (87 m)
Adult L 285 yds (261 m) 150 yds (137 m) 120 yds (110 m)

You can use any yarn with good memory such as wool or acrylic or mixes of both.

Our sample knitter combined two strands of fingering weight yarn by Sweet Georgia. She used 1 skein of Cash Luxe Spark in Pineapple and 1 skein of Cash Luxe Fine in Cayenne to create a marled DK weight fabric for this colorful beanie. She used size US 4 (3.5 mm) needles.

Sizes
The intention is that you work a custom size based on your own measurements. Standard size information is provided in the ebook for those who are gift or charity knitting.
