This pattern will give you the skills to dive into your yarn stash, grab a set of needles and knit a pair of socks to fit any recipient in any weight of yarn.

Working with your own needle choice and gauge you’ll learn how to:

  • Take measurements from a foot (or use a set of standard measurements)
  • Apply appropriate ease to make it fit as desired
  • Caculate a cast on
  • Calculate your toe increases
  • Caculate and knit to your instep length before heels (option for heels with or without gusset) Work heel (given as afterthought heel, but you can substitute your preferred heel)Work leg

Yarn and Yardage
This will depend on your choice of yarn and gauge, but as a guide allow at least the following amounts:

Depending on your yarn weight, allow about 110-330 yds/100-300 m for child sizes and 220-600 yds/200-550 m for adult sizes.

These thick and cozy sample socks were knitted with two strands of Sweet Georgia Yarns in fingering weight, held together: two strands of Cayenne (Cash Luxe Fine) for the heel and toe, Apple Pie (CashLuxe Fine) and Pineapple (Cash Luxe Spark) for the body, and two strands of Pineapple (Cash Luxe Spark) for the ribbing.

You may choose any yarn that pleases you. Socks for wearing in shoes are, unsurprisingly, best made with sock yarn. This kind of yarn is spun with a very tight twist to make it highly durable. It also often has a mixture of nylon for washability and toughness. House socks, which aren’t intended to withstand many miles of walking, can be made of softer yarn.

Sizes
The intention is that you work a custom size based on your own measurements. Links to standard size information is provided in the ebook for those who are gift or charity knitting.
