A LEAF STEM
Petiola is a delicate lace shawl with leaves working their way out from the centre to the sides. It has a slightly unusual shape, but once you wrap it around your shoulders you realise it embraces and cocoons you like a warm hug.

The shawl is knit back and forth, starting from the top centre with three large leaves. It then works its way out into two full leaf stems in the middle and two half-stems at the upper edge. This in the end creates its slightly square-ish shape. After the last row of knitting, the shawl is bound off with a simple crochet edge, which gives it an extra airy feeling.

Petiola is made for 2-ply wool yarn from the Swedish company Ullcentrum, but it is easy to adapt and works well with any sport-weight yarn. Ullcentrum was established in 1998 and produces yarn and other wool products from only Swedish wool, from breeds such as finewool and Gotland sheep. The yarn is available in both natural and dyed colors and in 1-, 2- and 3-ply. To order yarn, visit Ullcentrum.com.
