This decorative button is worked as a cover over a flat button using a small amount of size 20 crochet cotton in a single color. The delicately shaped cover has five petals. Each petal is easily created by a method similar to making a bobble or popcorn stitch. Rounds one and two together should measure 3/4” diameter, which is 1/4” wider than the flat button to be covered. A 4mm pearl bead is sewn to the center of the flower as a finishing touch.

This pattern could be adapted to larger sizes by using an matching hook and button diameter with the thread/yarn chosen. Likely a small plastic ring could be substituted for the flat button.

This the second of four crocheted button patterns designed by Isabelle Wolters and published together in Crochet World Magazine (1999, issue number 5) in an article titled “Quick & Easy Button Quartet”. The patterns appear on pages 18 and 13. All four patterns feature easy to find materials and only require four to seven rounds to complete.

Pattern indicates beginner level instructions, but the small size button and fine thread are probably a bit fiddly for true beginners. For those used to working with thread and steel hooks the buttons are both quick and easy to complete.
