The phase spiral blanket was inspired by the phase spirals in the Milky Way discovered by Antoja and colleagues in 2018 using the Gaia telescope. Since their discovery, they’ve been a hot topic in galactic dynamics, with many papers being dedicated to plotting grids of these spirals using various colours!

The spirals in this blanket are made as individual squares, working 2 colors at a time. These are then all joined up with slip stitches (or however you prefer to join them), and decorated with a simple hdc border using the remaining yarn.

This blanket has a lot of customisability, you can choose any stitch for the border, switch up the colours or amount of colours, and of course the size! Since the blanket has a modular construction, you can make it as big/small as you want (a guide on how many squares are needed for a single/double/queen blanket will be given). The pictured blanket measures 100/150 cm, using 11 x 15 squares.

You can use any yarn and gauge you want, and play around with how many squares you need. The spirals in the pictured blanket used a 3.5mm crochet hook and 4 ply yarn, with the squares
ending up being 9cm in width. Use this as a gauge if you want to follow my blanket sizing. The spiral squares take about 15-20 minutes to make.

The yarn requirements are for single (double) queen:

1 (2) 2 x Cotton Kings 500g cotton cone in black (09)

1 (2) 3 x 50g Hobbii Friends cotton 8/4 print in 9 different colours (listed below).

Some colors have been discontinued since my purchase of these yarns, so below are the alternative colorways as of 2025:

03 - Strawberry Love (red)
02 - Sea Buckthorn (orange)
01 - Summer Sunrise (yellow)
12 - Jungle Green (green)
10 - Fresh Mint (turquoise)
09 - Tropical Ocean (blue)
07 - Lavender Potpourri (purple)
34 - Violets (violet)
06 - Raspberry Sorbet (pink)

Each square uses very little yarn, so this could be an ideal scrap yarn project! The pattern includes the total squares required and squares per colour, so if you do end up changing the amount of colours you use, just follow the total count.

Happy crocheting!
