The 14 ply Picnic Beanie is inspired by the 1980s with a modern twist. It’s a simple beanie knit on circular needles using a version of basketweave stitch (hence the picnic name, i.e. picnic basket). Basketweave stitch is very distinctive and looks like a woven, however this is just an optical illusion. The picnic beanie knits up quickly in 14 ply. It took our pattern tester just two days to knit it.

The picnic beanie comes in three sizes, small (54cm circumference), medium (56cm circumference), and large (58cm circumference).

The gauge is 13 stitches and 17 rows to 10cm using stocking stitch, and 14 stitches and 18 rows to 10cm using basketweave stitch as described in this pattern.

To make this you will need:

  • Two balls of 14ply wool, 50g
  • One 6mm circular needle, 40cm long
  • One 7mm circular needle, 40cm long
  • One set 7mm double pointed needles
