The Piranesi Edging, from Donna Kooler’s Encyclopedia of Crochet, is a simple fan motif which works from one end of the lace strip to the other with no long starting chain to work off of. Fans are worked first to the desired length and then the header is worked onto the top of the fans at the end. Stitches used are chain, single crochet, half-double crochet, and double crochet, all of which are explained in the book. The size depends upon which thread and hook size you choose to use and the length is also up to the crocheter. It works up fairly fast and makes a large, good-looking trim for household linens in #10 thread. Smaller threads will produce daintier results and it would be lovely trimming a blouse or dinner napkin, for instance.

There is no specific thread size or gauge given. For a relatively short length of lace one ball of thread is more than sufficient.

This design has both written instructions in U.S. terminology and a large, clear chart.
