Planispiral is a circular shawl with a slightly unorthodox increase pattern. Knit it from the center out!

Once you’ve grasped the simple instructions, this meditative project is perfect for movie knitting or travel. Stitch markers can be used to help you keep your place.

It takes ~3 skeins of your favorite sock yarn: the sample is knit up in Cascade Heritage Wave in Tropical.

Gauge:
As shown, gauge is 21 sts and 26 rows in blocked stockinette, worked in the round. This design can be worked in any yarn weight, however, and gauge and yarn requirements will vary in that case. Please be sure to check your gauge, or carry extra yarn as insurance, or both.

Materials:

  • 1200 yards of fingering-weight yarn (shown in Cascade Yarns Heritage Wave in Tropical (508))
  • 1 set of 5 DPNs in US5/3.75mm, or size needed for gauge
  • 1 16” in size needed for gauge
  • 1 long 40”+ circular needle, in size needed for gauge
  • 2 stitch markers
  • One crochet hook, in size suited to yarn
  • Tapestry needle

Switch to circular & longer circular needles as needed. As the round gets larger, working on longer needles will become more comfortable for most knitters.
