This accidental pattern evolved from a fun community project in the German knitters’ group and has been test crocheted by several enthusiastic volunteers listed below.

While you can make a plate coral and mail it to your preferred coral reef installation project, the pattern also contains instructions to make a few useful home decor items, such as coaster, soap cozy or dish sponge, in case you want to keep some for yourself or use as small gifts. Goes well with your homemade soap!

Good for using up odds and ends, and not afraid of otherwise hard-to-tame loud colorways.

“Plattina” is worked in turned rows, alternating Main color and Embellishment color. Stitches of different height are used throughout the row, which gives the item its shape. There is only one row, which gets repeated throughout, and this row is symmetrical, so easy to memorize. The short edges are later joined with slip stitch, and the long endges are cinched to create a double-layered circle.

Depending on further finishing choices, the item can be turned into or used as a coaster, mug rug, soap cozy, soap bag, dish sponge or shower puff, or you can use up all your novelty yarn remnants and make a plate coral for the coral reef exhibition of your choice.

Pattern instructions are written out row by row and accompanied by a schematic as well as photo tutorials for important steps. The pattern is 8 pages long (5 of them photo tutorials containing detailed working step photos, 2 of them written instructions) and does not contain charts.

The pattern has been tested.
