Welcome to the Police Box MKAL! The newest season of Doctor Who is finally here – if you feel like knitting a fun TARDIS-inspired (hint, hint) project to celebrate with me, join me on the Jimmy Beans Wool Discussion board for a fun 4-week MKAL!

The pattern is on sale for $3.50 instead of $6.00 until April 15th. On June 1st, a fully compiled 1-piece version of the pattern will become available.

The pattern this time is not a shawl – we will be knitting a fun yoked cowl with stranded colorwork elements. Second hint: Can you say EXTERMIKNIT?

Lorna’s Laces created a special colorway for this MKAL called ‘Police Box’ – we will be using the String Quintet, plus a skein of Shepherd Sock in ‘Bigger on the Inside’, which – of course - is also part of the ‘Police Box’ colorway.

Handy yarn-only kits (please purchase and download your pattern here) are available at Jimmy Beans Wool.

About the pattern:
The pattern level is intermediate; it features several areas of stranded colorwork and is knit in the round, partly using the magic loop technique. It is sized for adults (one size fits all).

When purchasing the pattern, you will receive an Info Sheet that will help you get ready for the MKAL; each clue to the pattern will be sent directly to your Ravelry library (and your Inbox, so you’ll know it’s there!) on its release date – the first clue will be released on April 15. Once the MKAL is over, you will receive a compiled 1-piece version of the pattern.

Materials:
1 skein of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock (100g / 435 yds) in color ‘Bigger on the Inside’ (MC),
1 Lorna’s Laces String Quintet (127g / 525 yds) in color ‘Police Box’

OR 430 yds of fingering weight yarn for the MC
Plus 200 yds of fingering weight yarn in 1 color, and 100 yds each of 3 additional colors – see pairing tips below; OR any String Quintet that works with the color pairing tips; OR 100 yards each of 5 different colors..

Size 2.5mm / US 1.5 40” circular needle (or size to obtain gauge)
Stitch Markers, Darning needle

Color pairing tips:
If you would like to try a different color combination, here are a few general tips, plus some ideas:
Rules for picking colors are simple – Color A is the one that needs 200 yards (or you could make it two colors that go well together with 100 yards each); Color B should be something quite light or luminous that contrasts nicely with the MC (I would suggest natural, white, pastels or neons), and colors C and D need a high contrast with each other, as those will be used together for some of the colorwork.

All the suggested color schemes below use Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock (MC) and Lorna’s Laces Staccato or String Quintets:
The sample you will see throughout the pattern was made with the following color combination:
MC - Cermak, A – Pewter (x2), B - Natural, C - Charcoal, D - Aqua

Here are some other fun options, as shown in the photos on this page:
Red: MC - Ysolda Red, A – Charcoal (x2), B - Natural, C - Putty, D - Blackberry

Blue-Green: MC - Campbell, A – Dobson (x2), B - Natural, C - Aqua, D - Charcoal

Green: MC - Grasshopper, A – Pewter (x2), B - Natural, C - Charcoal, D - Owl of a Kind

Pink: MC - Whisper, Wildflowers String Quintet (available here)
