Polychromatic is a soft, light, colorful shawl with colored diamonds set in an airy openwork mesh. The pattern is inspired by Schoppel-Wolle’s Zauberball colors and the paintings of Paul Klee - the colorwork diamonds look like flickering little brushstrokes.

A relatively easy knit, with the added interest of choosing, mixing and blending colors like a painter. The CC lengths can be made up of shorter lengths of leftovers spliced together, or different colors of lighter weight yarn held double for a marled effect.

Elongated stitches create meandering movement as the MC colorway shifts from shade to shade. The undulating effect will be more pronounced in Zauberball colorways with more tonal and/or color variation, and can be amplified by mixing different colorways or occasionally splicing in lengths of different colors.

Knit on 3.25mm/US3 needles
MC: approx. 2.5 balls/1100 yds/1000m of Zauberball Crazy 2248
CC: approximately 315yds/285m (full diamond motifs require approximately 60ins/150cm each, partial motifs slightly less)
Dimensions: approx. 23ins/58.5cm wide by 64ins/163cm long
Gauge: approximately 20 sts and 22 rows = 4ins/10cm in drop stitch intarsia pattern
The edges of the finished shawl pattern are slightly more substantial than those shown in the pictures.

Techniques include simple lace knitting, stranding, intarsia, trapping, elongated drop stitches and lots of weaving in of ends.

Thank you to artist Liz Davison for knitting the sample shawl!

The pattern is charted - the pdf contains one chart, short written instructions & notes, and phototutorials on splicing yarns and weaving in ends.
