Gague is not critical, you can use any yarn and any needles, as long as you like the fabric. My shawlette has 40 cm in the hight and I used 80 of the yarn (aout 340 m). Make bigger or smaller, whatever pleases you!
The shawl is worked in two pieces sideways and then the pieces are knit together. You can wind the yarn into two more or less equal balls (you will need some yarn for the bind-off, so make one ball slightly bigger). Two pieces are joined by using 3 needle bind off method. If you do not like this, you can join the pieces with a needle/crochet hook or bind off so that the edge remains on the wrong side.
