Port Logan at the south westerly tip of Scotland has a surprisingly mild climate, allowing exotic and tropical plants like palms and tree ferns to thrive outside without protection all year round.

This top down, triangular lace shawl with its exotic lace flowers edge is inspired by this temperate part of Scotland. These are matched with an out of the ordinary lace pattern for the body of the shawl, depicting leaves on short stems made with wrap stitches, and a decorative centre spine. The shawl is finished with a crochet cast off.

The shawl can be made in 3 different sizes and is suitable for most lace, fingering and 4ply weight yarns in a wide range of natural fibres.

The yarn used here is:

Zitron Filigran Lace No. 1, 100% merino, 600m/656yds per 100g skein, col. 17842, lila.

Approx. yardage with US size 5/3.75mm needles is

480 yds/440m for size 1, wingspan 57”/144cm
660 yds/600m for size 2, wingspan 63”/160cm
820 yds/750m for size 3, wingspan 79”/200cm.

Other recommended yarns include:

Madelintosh tosh merino light, 100% merino, 420yds/384m per 100g.

Knitpicks Palette, 100% wool, 231 yds/211m per 50g.

Cascade Alpaca Lace, 100% alpaca, 437 yds/400m per 50g.

Lotus Yarns Silky Cashmere Fingering, 55% silk, 45% cashmere, 400 yds/366m per 55g.

The yarn requirement and finished sizes should be seen as guidance only and vary depending on yarn weight and needle size chosen as well as the degree of blocking. The knitting gauge is not critical.

The pattern comes in form of charts and some written instructions. It is recommended for intermediate knitters and the ability to read knitting charts is essential. Other skills required are provisional cast on for the tab, left and right leaning as well as double centre decreases and crochet cast off. Experience with lace knitting will be useful.
