Pottery originated before the Neolithic period with ceramic objects made of clay, like the Venus of Dolní Věstonice discovered in the Czech Republic, which date back to 29,000–25,000 BC, and pottery vessels that were discovered in Jiangxi, China, which date back to 18,000 BC. Pottery may be decorated in many different ways and some decoration can be done before or after the firing. Both the color and the figures used in this hat were inspired by the terra sigillata style of the Ancient Roman Pottery, a Latin term used to designate a class of decorated red-gloss pottery.

The hat is knitted in the round from brim to crown. Instructions are provided for two sizes: small and large. It features cables, twisted stitches and ribbing.
