I wanted to knit with bright colors, and was inspired by Daniel Quasar’s excellent Progress Pride Flag. This is suitable as a potholder or decorative item, knit in bright cotton yarn as a double-sided flag. Made with the recommended yarn it measures 7 inches by 10 inches, and two options are given, depending on your preferred orientation.

For both, you start in the same way by casting on double the stitches for the edge of the flag. Then knit as though you are making a tube that’s attached at the cast-on edge to make a flag with two knit sides, where the excess yarn ends are tucked inside the two layers. Then do a three needle bind-off edge at the end.

Note: When switching colors, as with most stranded knitting, put the needle into the stitch, carry over the previous yarn as if to knit, carry over the new yarn as if to knit, and then cross the previous yarn back and knit with the new yarn. This catches the old color float and prevents a gap between color changes.
