A yummy hat, lined and warm, soft and cool knitted in Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply Toes gradient set Espresso.

This pattern is easier to follow if you have knitted stranded colorwork from charts previously since there are quite long floats to handle. The hat is knitted in stockinette in the round and it’s slightly difficult to get a very even fabric and you have to work decreases and colorwork simultaneously for the upper part as per the chart.

In Sweden the Scandinavian style hat became very popular in the 1970’s when the Slalom World Champion Ingemar Stenmark wore hats his mother (Gunborg Stenmark) and a cousin designed and knitted for him. It was a tradition in the slalom club in Tärnaby where he came from to knit hats for each other. The original hats are still kept by the Swedish company Sätila which turned these hats into a commercial success (machine knitted). The Primeval Forest Hat has a similar, quite long, shape, but the colorwork is very different. The hat is intended to be worn with the fold row at front/back, but please go ahead and style the hat the way you want!

There is a matching cowl which could be knit from the the same yarn kit used for the hat if you like, it’s a separate pattern you can purchase from Signature Needle Arts website. Primeval Forest Cowl:
