Crochet blocks are wonderfully versatile. They’re perfect for using up odds and ends of yarn. You can pick them up and put them down as you please. You can make them in a million and 1 designs and all sorts of shapes and sizes. Join them and make them into blankets, throws, wraps, scarves, cushions, cardigans …

This block starts with puff flowers which are fab for all sorts of things, but the pattern shows you how to turn them into mini hexagons and mini squares. Afterwards you can join and use the blocks in any way you choose.

The pattern can be used for any yarn and a suitable hook, although I sometimes like to use a hook a size or 2 bigger than recommended. Firstly, the blocks will crochet bigger which means you have to make less, and secondly they’ll also be lighter and softer which is nicer for blankets and things to wear. Use whatever you happen to have and naturally the bigger the yarn and hook, the bigger your square will be.

:o) I used a 3.0mm crochet hook and various double knits. My square blocks are 5cm² and the hexagons are 6.5cm across and 3.5cm each side.
