Use a hook appropriate to the yarn you’re using. The featured purple used an 8mm hook, 12ply handspun yarn, 142 yds, which gave a length of 130cm (51”)

PATTERN EDIT (20-Apr-2020): Removed the first turn in Second Motif. This creates a tidier, more compact join with the First Motif… and you’re also not trying to work a slip st backwards!
