The Queen of the Night is a dramatic deep blue shawl with a red lotus flower design worked in colourwork around the edges and hemmed to close in the stranded reverse side and to add weight so the shawl drapes beautifully and sits on the shoulders without slipping. The body of the shawl is worked in a simple eyelet flower stitch so that the colour of the clothing you are wearing will show through like flowers.
It is worked from the top down in one piece. The pattern is available as a kit from Renaissance Dyeing. Two weights of 4-ply wool are used. The silky lighter weight Blue Faced Leicester yarn is used for the body of the shawl and the heavier weight Poll Dorset wool is used to emphasise the lotus flowers.
