The Rafnerup Shawl is a lovely filet crochet design that mimics the criss-cross pattern of tartan. Filet crochet is an easy technique which uses only the basic ch and dc stitches (US terms). Horizontal and vertical bands of open and solid blocks create the distinctive pattern of squares and lines typical of tartan. You can make the wrap in a solid color or, like here, you can use two colors to enhance the tartan effect.

Rafnerup is the Viking age spelling of a quaint little hamlet in the south of Sweden.

Pattern notes: As is common with filet crochet the pattern consists of a grid rather than a symbol chart. The technique and how to read the grid is explained in depth and helpful pictures are included in the PDF. Also included are instructions for how to alter the width and the length of the shawl.

Skill level: advanced beginner

Yarn amounts: Approximately 2100m (2300yards) of any light sport weight or fingering weight yarn. I used Highland Wool from Hobbii.com; 8 skeins of Wintergreen (no. 20) and 4 skeins of Licorice (no. 4). If you choose another yarn weight you will need to adjust the amount of yarn.

Hook: 2,5mm to 3mm depending on your choice of yarn and your personal tension.

Size: the example shown here is 54x180cm. The size of your shawl will of course depend on your choice of yarn and your personal crochet style.
Both the width and length of the shawl can be altered. How to do this is explained in the PDF.
