Rainbow Child is a striped short sleeved hoodie which has been designed to showcase rainbow yarns. Written in twelve sizes from NB to 12yrs, this short sleeved unisex hoodie also has a hoodless option and a great range of sizes to fit your Rainbow child.
The Rainbow Child hoodie is seamless and knitted from the neck down with raglan sleeves in a double knit/ 8ply yarn and in a four and two row stripe sequence. The pockets are marked while knitting with waste yarn and then released before the 2 x 4 rib hem is worked, which is finished with a contrast i-cord bind off.
The hood is picked up at the neckline and then knitted upwards in the reverse stripe order; there is a hoodless option too.
The ribbed button band is picked up afterwards to allow for easy use of trims and coordinating colours and then cast off with a contrast i-cord bind off to finish it off nicely. The short sleeves are picked up and knitted to finish with a contrast stripe. This is then finished in 2x2rib with a contrast i-cord bind off.
Please knit the size of your child’s chest measurement, rather than their age, and add or subtract length in the body and the hood for their age. This will ensure the best fit, for example my 4yr daughter fits a 2yr size with a 21inch chest but it is knitted with size 4yr length as she is petite. There is approximately 2 -3 inches (5 -7.5cm) of positive ease included in this pattern for a relaxed fit which is also great for layering. For a more fitted look, knit one size smaller than your child’s chest measurement.

A light dk weight wool 8ply yarn is recommended. A main neutral yarn and rainbow contrast yarns, or any combination of colours for striping would suit this design. This design is perfect for using up scrap yarn in stash.
Some suggested yarns include Meraki Studio NZ DK 8ply or any other DK 8ply you can get gauge with.
Thank you very much to my amazing group of testers!!
